At the time of my writing today's blog, I have been employed with the Federal Prison system for over nine years. I have done consulting on the side for much of my career while pursuing my MBA and navigating to a position that was much more catered to my skill set and passions. You may be thinking to yourself, how does working in a prison make this guy the right fit for my business consulting needs? I'm going to briefly list some examples of how I turned my situation into opportunity.
Time in the Chapel: After working as a Correctional Officer, I was able to move into a position with the Religious Services' Departments as an administrative support staff for the three Chaplains that were employed at the prison. I got that position at the end of November of 2019, and we all are aware of what happened in March of 2020. The volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world showed how VUCA it could truly be with the Covid-19 pandemic. That initially proved incredibly challenging in a correctional environment, but as the admin staff, I developed a plan to adapt and continue to provide the services that the various stakeholders in the prison had.
Everything changed approximately three months into the pandemic when one of the Chaplains was selected for another prison assignment, one went out with injury, and one went out due to Covid precautions. I was then left as the sole member of the department in the height of the chaos. I immediately got to work and planned my approach, identified all the stakeholders I needed to focus on (both internal and external), established my systems, conducted in-depth analysis on all of the day-to-day operations that NEEDED to occur to comply with not only policy, but also the Constitution.
I was alone in that position for approximately six months, and in that time, I did not receive one administrative remedy, I did not miss one deadline, and I ended up being awarded Correctional Worker of the year for what I was able to accomplish. To this day, "Father Moran" is a moniker I wear with pride. It is 100% about ownership and knowing the needs of all the stakeholders. This translates to every industry, and for the record, I did not enter that position with an extensive religious background, but my method for business success is transcending.
Eventual Move to Re-Entry: In February of 2022, after a few additional successful years of Religious Service's work, I was approached by the Associate Warden and Warden regarding a vacant position in Re-Entry that had been vacant since October of 2021. It was proposed that I took that over on a temporary basis with zero promises that I could even attain it permanently in hopes I could get that department operational again. The stakeholders for that department had changed a bit and Congress was getting involved with the implementation of the First Step Act, and we were not, like many other prisons, in compliance due to the vacancy.
I accepted that position and for a full year, I ran that department alone while still operating the Religious Services' department aaaaaand pursuing my MBA. It was all about being organized, developing a system, identifying the stakeholders, and formulating my approach towards the various stakeholder needs. I built the program from the ground up and focused a lot of my energy on my brand inside the prison. I made outside connections (some of you are reading this blog right now) and I helped the inmate population create their re-entry tool belt as I called it.
My favorite part of my job is the consultation work I can provide these marginalized individuals, in which I have taught them how to write business plans, obtain funding, and jump into the world of entrepreneurship once they are released. I am proud of some of the success stories that I have been a part of, and truly enjoy the work I do for the prison and the community.
To wrap this blog post up, I am the right consultant for you, because what I am capable of is scalable and adaptable in any and all business environments. I am a fixer, and my true passion comes from seeing a problem, analyzing the root causes, developing a workable system (many of them are actually automatized), implementing the system with appropriate monitoring/adaptation, and then optimizing it to perfectly suit the business needs.
